For the People, Vol. 18

Let's begin by closing our eyes.

Do you see or feel any patterns that keep repeating themselves in your life?

When dreaming of a refreshed environment for Range and a completely reimagined rangebykaraduval.com, I found myself surrounded by patterns.

The Spiral is an image that has been deeply embedded in our Range DNA since inception. It takes physical form in the presence of ending each class with a spiraling embrace. It takes form in all of our fluid motions, the comforting repetition of familiar cues, the continuous journey to look inward and return to the world with increased awareness, capability and strength. The spiral is quite literally living and breathing inside of us every time we move together on Range.

Admittedly, throughout the creative process, I attempted to push away out of fear that it was too literal. Ashley Brooks, who created our spiral, simply said “it's just what makes sense.” A pattern repeats itself even when fought.

I found myself gravitating toward a soft beige yellow. It's a color that I love to describe as a page of a book that's been sitting outside in the sun for years and years. It's worn, experienced, lived in. To me, it's a color that's gained wisdom.

Yesterday, as the sun flooded the studio, I laughed as I looked at the walls. When the sun enters the space, the color that I chose for the studio (Lime White by Farrow+Ball) turns almost the exact color. A pattern repeats itself even in the subconscious.

I've personally been experiencing an extreme desire to unravel. Though grateful for the poise and grace that ballet instilled within me, I find myself wanting to experience my 30's in a slightly more undone, wild, natural way.

This shift is reflected in my unkempt hair and natural skin texture in the new photos. A pattern repeats itself - this time as a conscious decision.

Arguably, the most prevalent pattern that I've come to realize is despite our past branding feeling true to who we are, it became quite obvious that we were craving an atmosphere that looked like how Range feels.

We've been through so many shifts in 3.5 years. We began with The Origin and The Foundation and look how we've expanded together, We've continued to adapt and have welcomed Arrow, Precipice, Weighted, Jitterbug and Half + Half. This a result of everyone feeling welcomed to share their stories and verbalize their movement desires.

Sisterhood / Kneading + Rising / Wildling are class themes that were created from the results of transformative Retreats.

Physicality Of Parenthood / I've Fallen And I Can Get Up / Strength Of A Woman are class themes that celebrate the tremendous power and capability of motherhood.

Jitterbug as a category was created to provide us with an outlet to channel some of our biggest and most complicated emotions such as grief, anxiety, anger and isolation.

The truth is, this evolution of Range is a collection of our own lived experiences.

This is why so many of you have already remarked that this new branding feels so genuine – it's because it honest to goodness is a physical representation of who we are now and who we hope to be in the future.

A dear friend of mine, Soko of Sokoi Shop, recently gifted me a book called A Way Of Life, Notes On Ballenberg. Though the book speaks on Swiss Architecture at the outdoor museum, Ballenberg, there was a particular excerpt that has been a source of validation and clarity since my eyes landed on it.

“It was the appropriateness of these buildings and their interiors that caught our eye. No attempts to be original, no quest for style, no desire to impress, no invention for the sake of novelty but clearly out of necessity. Buildings that respond to specific needs and resources, accepting constraints as a matter of course. And yet, the result is not an architecture of sad, subsistence- level functionality but a genuine expression of work well done.”

My web developer, Erin Hammond of Soiree Studio, and I set on a quest to create a new website that provides you with the information you crave, set on a beautiful landscape, without overwhelming your senses. I kept coming back to one of our favorite phrases on Range…a place to land. My hope is that this new website provides you with clarity, curiosity and the desire to move with us on Range. If a long time Range member, my hope is that you nod your head, give yourself a hug and simply think to yourself….

This looks like how Range feels.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Erin Hammond, Ashley Brooks, Monique Juliette Baron and Alice Saunders for bringing this vision to form.
